IM Mallorca 2016 – Race Report

Ironman Mallorca 2016 – A tale of two races. After a great result at IMUK I reminded myself that a consistent build up and training was the key to a solid race, with this in mind I settled into the week before Mallorca with a different mindset. The buzz after UK was amazing, a few were baffled that I declined my Kona slot but my year had been mapped out long before IMUK and the aim was just to win the AG, then aim for Mallorca, whatever happened, I was at peace with the journey I had chosen to take for 2016. At the start of the year I knew I had to have the best race of...

Ironman UK 2016 – Race Report

Ironman UK 2016 – Race Report Preamble IMUK is my home race, the support grows each year, since 2009 I have seen this change in such a great way, the race is embraced fully. It’s also an honest course, the bike is tough, changes over the years only making it harder still. The run can be broken into sections but its pretty challenging all the same. As the day draws on the support grows to a point where it resembles a European race, its enough to make the strongest well up. Being a home race and a local athlete there is a lot of support and this makes it a special place to compete. This year I was lucky enough to get a place through my...

Ironman Barcelona 2015 – Race Report...

IM Barcelona 2015 – Race Report Preamble Just over 12 months have passed since IM Copenhagen, it wasn’t the best executed ironman race I had done and I went there to post a time, so in 2015 I wanted to change a few things and race faster and smarter. Picking the right course was the first part, IM Barcelona ticked the box, it wasn’t one I had done, wasn’t full and was supposed to be fast. I also decided after Copenhagen to add a ‘tag’ or badge to my RoadID bracelet, this had my PB time of 9:42 from 2008. When I crossed the line in Copenhagen 1 minute outside my PB I was gutted so I decided...

Ironman Copenhagen 2014 – Race Report...

The thought of doing an Ironman doesn’t enter the world of most sane people, for me it’s a test of endurance that has me gripped and challenges every inch of me every time I attempt it. So just to challenge myself once more, in fact for the 15th time, I settled on Ironman Copenhagen, billed as a fast course the race had been taken over by WTC the previous year in the ongoing cat and mouse dick waving contest between IRONMAN and Challenge brands. (For those that aren’t aware, these guys are the 2 biggest organisers in ironman racing and keep taking over each other’s races – it can get a little confusing to enter and find it...

Race Report – IM Hawaii – 2012...

Race Report – IM World Championships Kona – 2012 The photos are all here The dust has been settling for a few weeks now and I am still harking back to the race, Kona is still the single most exciting race I have ever done, twice now, its something I will never forget. I’ve found a YouTube video of Ironman in Hawaii that I thought I would share, its not from the 2012 race but a few years ago. For those that don’t race it *may* put across a little of why myself and thousands of others do this, you’ll probably think we are still bonkers but at least you will have some sympathy for the obsession 🙂...

Kona post race mini report

Goooood morning all, just waking up from a slightly uncomfortable sleep, sun burn and chafing all rolled into one made for a bit of a disturbed sleep. So by all accounts that was one of the toughest days on the island, searing heat, brutal winds and very high humidity, it’s hard to comprehend this during the race, you really just think you are having a bad day, and towards the mid point on the run I really was. Swim – this went as planned but boy, it was PHYSICAL this year, I know people are out there to win and place well but it was another level, animal like, no patience for the odd clash of arms or...

Race Report – IMUK 2012

IMUK 2012 Race Report Preamble In times of austerity what better way to save a bit of money than to go back to your local race. No travel expense, roll out of bed race morning, less than an hour to the start and be ready to go with little fuss. Also, having a sponsor pay your place is always a bonus and push in the right direction, so to Phil at dandmcycles.com I appreciate all of your support over the last 12 months mate, thank-you. IMUK is based in the North West of the UK and with the swim location just 7 miles from me and the main bike route loop less than 20 miles away I’m in a great...

Prior to this I was looking at going to either IM Arizona or IM Cozumel, the discussions now centred around why we would do this if I could jump in a car and travel 5 hours and race on home soil. The course looked a challenge, the earlier test event in June...

Race Report – Trentham Middle 2011...

The ‘Gatorade’ Big Half is nestled in the Trentham Estate near Stoke and fitted in nicely in my build up training for IM Wales in September. After the Swashbuckler in May I needed to use another half iron distance race to seek out any improvements and keep myself on a consistant path to the ‘A’ race. Myself and Dan had decided to check out the course the weekend before, it nailed a 60 miler and also meant I got a heads up, talk about a surprise, I was led to believe this was a flat fast course, looks like they changed it due primarily to the issues with traffic lights but maybe due to the negative feedback I...

Race Report – Swashbuckler Middle 2011...

My approach to this race wasn’t a classic, well maybe a Rosey classic but I wouldn’t recommend the buildup. The last month saw a great volume of training, with Fudge Packer camp well and truely over and the following week a natural down week I decided on the Tuesday before the Swashbuckler to hit a local race series in Bedford and do their 6 miler instead of a steady 45 mins planned. Officially I was clocked at 39.03 but my watch had the important bit, 38.56. I felt good but my calves were still tight after every run I was doing and I needed to stretch out a bit more. The rest of the week consisted of spinning,...

Race Report – IM Hawaii 2009

Race Report – Ironman World Championships Kona – 2009 10th Oct 2009 – Kailua Kona Pre ‘pre’ race If you have been following my blog you know how this trip and qualification came about. Landing in Kona was the start of an amazing 2 weeks, ‘cruising’ Ali’i Drive the first morning we arrived at 6.30am after 5 hours sleep was never in doubt, I wasn’t missing this. I lapped up the first swim, I then spent my first morning in the famous Lava Java coffee house, shoulder to shoulder with pro triathletes, most I didn’t recognise but you just ‘knew’, it was a buzz thing. Then as the week went on and more people turned up for the...

Race Report IM Wisconsin 2008

OK, so its now Tuesday so I have had a few days to let things calm down and soak in. I am still in a little pain (read, lots of pain, legs are killing me !!) This is a long report as usual with a few pictures. At least you don’t need the build up this time as the blog has been continuous. Can I also just say this is an AMAZING event to do, they had 3500 volunteers and the day couldn’t have been organised better in my eyes, I loved the day, the course was tough but fair, the spectators superb and at the right locations at the right time. Wisconsin is beautiful and the race...

Race Report – Challenge Roth 2008...

Well seeing as I have a blog and I look at others I thought I better start using it, bit late I know as most of the build up to the race should be logged here but I store info in so many places I am sometimes not able to keep up with myself !!Anyway, below is a LONG race report for the Roth race.Preamble I have just finished reading Candy’s Arizona report for some inspiration but was crying so much that I couldn’t see so I had to stop, this one is more like Smiffy’s epic Norseman than one of Candy’s comedy’s but hey I have never been any different, so apologies once again in advance. I’d...

Race Report – Bala Middle 2008

Last time I did this race was 2006, 21st then and because of the course change I have decided that the aim this time was to place higher as times are irrelevant. Well, the course was tougher but just as enjoyable, well marshalled and a good challenge, as anyone who has raced here the run is a bitch and it never really gets any easier. Swim 32.57 (inc T1) New wetsuit (2XU V1) was superb, felt comfy all the way round and only started to have issues at the end when I was fighting the water, should learn to relax into the final 400m Bike 2.23.07 Found this tough but went all out as this is my strongest...

Race Report – IM Lanzarote 2007

Ironman Lanzarote 2007 There are a couple of reasons for doing this race, its tough and it’s a pre cursor to finding out what Hawaii can be like etc but none of them were in my mindset. Mine were, this was the only European one I hadn’t done and it also gave me a good reason to have a 2 week holiday in a warm resort and thus for Kelly not to be using her holidays again following me around to do another IM. What then made it a better race to do was a number of people I knew were also contemplating the same foolhardy race, pirates, Chester Tri members and training friends as well. And then...

Race Report – IM Frankfurt 2006

IM Germany 2006 Frankfurt – European Championships. The journey to Frankfurt started many moons ago with entry, hotels, flight booking and forum threads but the ‘keeping it real’ journey was on the Wednesday before the race, I was travelling with Kelly and 3 guys from Chester Tri to Cologne by airline and catching 3 trains to Frankfurt. To know how much time I spend trying to find the best routes, cheapest ‘good’ hotels etc means that to have discarded everything in favour of travelling Easyjet because of the great bike carriage deal is to know how much of a let down it was to me 2 minutes after we arrived at the check in desk. The problems started...

Race Report – Norseman 2005

Norseman 2005 The race pictures are here We set off Wednesday 3rd August on our epic journey, lots had been made of this race, the hardest Iron Distance race in the world ! was one of the boasts. In 4 days time I would find out. I travelled with my support crew which was mandatory and who also happened to be my girlfriend Kelly. Also in our party was Nick Campbell from Chester Tri and Tom his mate and support crew. We decided to drive from the airport at Gardermoen to Rjukan which was the start of the climbing section of the marathon leg. This would mean we could drive the whole of the route backwards checking out...

Race Report – IM France 2005

Ironman France 2005-06-19 The photos are all here The first thing that hit me as we landed in Nice was how hot it was, it was only Thursday at 10.30am and it was already close to 30degrees. The temperature was supposed to be building for the weekend so heat was going to be an issue from the start. The transfer system to the hotel from the airport was pretty painless, 4 € to the rail station and a short walk. The Chester party had been gathering momentum all week from the Monday and by today there was already most of the contingent of 15 in Nice. The supporters with ties to individual athletes were here already and we...

Race Report – IM Austria 2004

IM Austria ‘04 Pictures are all here I was travelling with Nick Campbell and Lisa(his wife) for this one and we hadn’t actually met until 2 weeks before for a ride out to Audlem, needn’t have worried, we’re triathletes after all, get on with anyone. Simon Mac was going to make it under his own steam. We had managed to avoid all the carnage of the previous 4 months heartache with Ryanair by deciding to travel to Slovenia with Easyjet landing at Llubjana(sp?). Free carriage for bike and only an hour from the race by hire car it turned out to be the best option after listening to some of the horror stories in Klagenfurt from Ryanair transport....
